Why “The Wilderness?”
|
The people of God wandered for forty years in the wilderness, after their exodus from Egypt, searching for the promised land. They were tested there, but they were always fed and protected by God. John the Baptist was a voice crying out in the wilderness, calling people to a new way of living. Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness after his baptism, praying to God, and preparing for his ministry as the Messiah. This Cathedral church was once in the wilderness, before the city of Denver sprung up around it. Its official name recalls these origins: The Cathedral of Saint John in the Wilderness. For centuries, religious pilgrims have sought out the wilderness, looking for an experience of God. The wilderness is a quiet place, free from the hectic bustle of life and free from distraction. It is a place of stillness, where mind and soul can wander, searching for meaning of life … and searching for God. It can be unsettling, a place of questions, but also of transformation. It can be a haven of peace and renewal, of nourishment and creativity. It is holy ground. Whether you are a life-long Christian, looking for a different worship experience, or have never entered a church before, we welcome you into the community of the wilderness. If you are new to us, please participate as you are comfortable. You are entering into an ancient ritual, it may take some time to settle into the rhythm of worship, but we invite you to join us. |
